By the year 1914, Egon Schiele developed a more accurate style of depiction. This resulted in his representations of female figures becoming more conventionally beautiful, but losing some of their frantic intensity. The artist's lines, previously jagged and exploratory, became smooth and precise, capturing the body's curves with unwavering accuracy. The intricate retracing, hatching, and scrolled embellishments seen in his earlier works were replaced by single, flawless strokes. Color always followed the line. Schiele typically started with a base glaze of ocher or brown, which outlined the primary volumes. He then applied brief touches of brighter gouache over this, outlining prominent bulges and concavities and depicting key protrusions such as knuckles or cheekbones. His relatively three-dimensional approach to flesh and drapery contrasted with the bolder stylization of hair and stockings. In these areas, the dense paint surface was molded by the flow of Schiele's brush.
